PROTO THEMA: THE FUTURE OF THE GLOBAL LNG FLEET AND THE DOMINANCE OF GREEK SHIPOWNERSHIP
February 11, 2025
As reported by Auchintoul Oil & Gas Consultants, the global fleet of LNG carriers with a capacity exceeding 100,000 cubic meters reached 208 vessels by
December 31, 2024, with an additional 330 vessels currently on order. Projections for 2025 suggest that 102 new LNG vessels are anticipated to be delivered,
driven by rising demand and evolving market requirements. Furthermore, there is a notable emphasis on the growth of LNG trading and the necessity for
innovative and more efficient shipping technologies to satisfy market expectations. These trends may result in further orders for new LNG carriers and
modifications to the existing fleet. According to estimates from Auchintoul Oil & Gas Consultants, the oldest and least efficient vessels may be phased out
of the market or repurposed as floating storage and regasification units (FSRU), thereby creating new opportunities in gas storage and transportation.
